Autobiography by Anderl Heckmair, one of the successful team to make the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger.
Heckmair was a close witness to two great events of the 20th century, one political, one sporting - the rise and fall of Hitler and the Nazis and the first ascent of the North Face of the Eiger, where he led the successful four man team of himself, Ludwig Vörg, Heinrich Harrer and Fritz Kasparek.
His autobiagraphy is naturally partly devoted to this climb but also covers his ascent of the Walker Spur and expeditions and climbs to Rakapohi, the Ruwenzori and America.
Well illustrated with historical photos.
By Anderl Heckmair with a foreward by Reinhold Messner. Translated by Tim Carruthers.
