The advent of the GPS system has transformed mountain navigation in recent years as it is now possible to know exactly where you are in any weather conditions and at any time of day, something that took a huge mixture of experience, guesswork and good luck in the past. However, relying completely on a GPS for navigation is a not a good idea and has got many people into difficulties. Any mountain rescue team member would tell you that knowing how to navigate with a map and compass is a number one requirement for any mountain activity. Moreover, in case of inadvertent separation in poor conditions it is highly recommended that each member of the party carries their own map and compass - and knows how to use them!
