Situated on the Mediterranean coast of the Peloponnese peninsula, surrounded by beautiful rock formations, the small town of Leonidio is a perfect destination for climbing in Greece. There are many reasons to consider Leonidio as 'the new Kalymnos' but the local climbing cooperative, who have published this guidebook, present the area with its own history and unique qualities. This edition also describes routes (including quite a number of long multi-pitch climbs) in the nearby area of Kyparissi and includes 14 new sectors and 355 extra routes compared to the 2022 edition.
There are more than 40 introductory pages describing the area, climate, wildlife, how to get there, accommodation, suggestions for rest days, access to crags and the history of climbing around Leonidio. The photo-topos cover 2,673 single pitch routes and 49 multi-pitch routes across 111 sectors.
The guidebook is very clearly laid out and provides loads of useful information in a compact format. Each sector is preceded by an introductory text and a detailed approach description. Further information follows as a tabular overview (number of routes sorted by grade) and using symbols (altitude, orientation, wall gradient, access time, parking situation, child-friendliness, GPS coordinates, etc). The colour phototopos are very easy to use.
The climbing guide is accompanied by a 72 page pamphlet containing further information on how to get there, history, climate and local infrastructure, suggestions for break days, local cuisine, accommodation etc, as well as the history of development of climbing around Leonidio. This division into climbing guidebook and brochure is an interesting idea is intended to reduced the bulk and weight of the guidebook in your rucksack.
